The Value of Character
The sense of duty, the sense of what is to be done in a circumstance really takes character, not just book formulas. It takes deep character, and ultimately character means being dear to Krishna as is described to Arjuna in the 12th chapter of the Gita. Krishna then decorates one with such qualities.

Where Intention Goes, Attention Flows
I look forward to each morning as I take rest at night: Tomorrow is another opportunity to take shelter of the Holy Name when I chant my japa. And, I feel so inspired and I want to chant more.
So you may not be there yet but you can cultivate in that manner and that’s where your attention will go. Because the intention has just been expressed, that’s where your attention will go. And when your attention goes (to your relationship with the Holy Name) there is nothing nicer in the three worlds!

Cultivating Our True Shelter
It’s not a balance issue – balancing the spiritual with the material aspects of our life, as some persons think, it’s a consciousness issue – consciously being aware of our circumstances and, while addressing our circumstances, maintaining undivided attentiveness upon our genuine shelter. Above any other consideration, most essential is the ongoing cultivation of our genuine shelter.”

Give people the opportunity to hear about Krsna. It’s a very simple service. It’s not a merchantile service. It’s a brahminical service. We are broadcasting the glories of Krsna. And, book distribution will assist the Bhagavat dharma purpose of giving the opportunity of hearing and chanting about Krsna to others. It not only facilitates hearing and chanting about Krsna, but it facilitates hearing the message in disciplic succession because there are some people who think , they know something about Krsna, but factually they have not heard properly. Yes!

Ask yourself “why” and find a “why” that resonates with you and keep asking it. Go deeper, and deeper and deeper, and deeper and then the “what” and the “how” becomes really easy because inside there is a strong answer to the “why” question, “I want Krsna’s association” – not just a liberation idea.

Haridas Thakura says that in the human form of life there is a tongue that can chant. In other forms of life, the tongue can’t easily chant: there are birds, bees and insects. But if they hear the chanting of a pure devotee, then they also become a resident of Vaikuntha. They become eligible to become a resident of Vaikuntha by hearing that chanting.

“One of the eligibility of a candidate in bhakti is that one is neither too much attached nor too much detached. One who is too much attached is the materialist and too much detached is the impersonalist. Give it up! Why? Because it is a source of misery so give it up. But bhakti isn’t too much in either direction. There is a willingness to accept what is necessary for service to Krsna, and the operative principle is service to Krsna. So accept what is needed for service to Krsna and not other things…It is fertile ground for the seed of bhakti to grow.”

I personally experienced the dedication that Prabhupada invested in making the Bhagavatam available to us. For many hours, every night at an elderly with a body that was failing him – we did not know all the things that were failing him – he just transcended them. Why? Compassion. How can one not be grateful to one who has changed your life? Sacrificing and sacrificing and sacrificing – purely out of compassion for persons who are suffering. He just wanted us to be happy and relieve us from our lost, miserable condition of life. Although we struggled by being disconnected from Krsna, he wanted us to make the Krsna connection.

Out of great mercy to His devotees, Krsna purges out the root of all karma namely nescience and evil desires. What brings about our sufferings over and over again is ignorance.
We don’t say “No” to the fire or ordeal. We say “no” to the ignorance at the root of why the ordeal is happening that is, saying “No” to Krsna, and “Yes” to evil desires. From ignorance comes ignorant activity, and from ignorant activity comes bondage and suffering. When ordeal comes your way, it’s important to understand this principle because ordeal is going to come.

If we accept the covering of the soul to be the self and abandon the soul then there are unavoidable miseries. People are so caught up in the miseries and they are trying their very best to adjust their miseries but it never gets adjusted because the foundation is still there. They have to remove the foundation of abandonment of self and the mistaken identity of self. Otherwise, miseries perpetuate. Prabhupada calls it in this purport as the “insoluble factors of material existence”.
