Haridas Thakura says that in the human form of life there is a tongue that can chant. In other forms of life, the tongue can’t easily chant: there are birds, bees and insects. But if they hear the chanting of a pure devotee, then they also become a resident of Vaikuntha. They become eligible to become a resident of Vaikuntha by hearing that chanting.

“One of the eligibility of a candidate in bhakti is that one is neither too much attached nor too much detached. One who is too much attached is the materialist and too much detached is the impersonalist. Give it up! Why? Because it is a source of misery so give it up. But bhakti isn’t too much in either direction. There is a willingness to accept what is necessary for service to Krsna, and the operative principle is service to Krsna. So accept what is needed for service to Krsna and not other things…It is fertile ground for the seed of bhakti to grow.”

I personally experienced the dedication that Prabhupada invested in making the Bhagavatam available to us. For many hours, every night at an elderly with a body that was failing him – we did not know all the things that were failing him – he just transcended them. Why? Compassion. How can one not be grateful to one who has changed your life? Sacrificing and sacrificing and sacrificing – purely out of compassion for persons who are suffering. He just wanted us to be happy and relieve us from our lost, miserable condition of life. Although we struggled by being disconnected from Krsna, he wanted us to make the Krsna connection.

Out of great mercy to His devotees, Krsna purges out the root of all karma namely nescience and evil desires. What brings about our sufferings over and over again is ignorance.
We don’t say “No” to the fire or ordeal. We say “no” to the ignorance at the root of why the ordeal is happening that is, saying “No” to Krsna, and “Yes” to evil desires. From ignorance comes ignorant activity, and from ignorant activity comes bondage and suffering. When ordeal comes your way, it’s important to understand this principle because ordeal is going to come.

If we accept the covering of the soul to be the self and abandon the soul then there are unavoidable miseries. People are so caught up in the miseries and they are trying their very best to adjust their miseries but it never gets adjusted because the foundation is still there. They have to remove the foundation of abandonment of self and the mistaken identity of self. Otherwise, miseries perpetuate. Prabhupada calls it in this purport as the “insoluble factors of material existence”.

Q: I understand that the Supreme Lord came in the Satya-Yuga as Kapila-Deva to teach meditation, as Krishna in the Dwapara-Yuga to teach temple devotion, and as Sri Krishna Chaitanya in the Kali-Yuga Mahaprabhu to teach the glories of Sankirtan. However, I am having difficulty finding the name of the red avatar who came in the Treta-Yuga to teach the mysteries of fire sacrifice. Could you tell me the name of this Yuga-Avatar?

The yuga avatar for Treta Yuga is Yajna, who appeared to Brahma to establish fire sacrifice as the process for self-realization.

Q: For long as I can remember, I have been a devotee of Lord Vishnu. On numerous occasions, I have seen him in my dreams talking to me. I am not a ritualistic individual any more, I don’t sit in my home temple because I have surpassed that stage. Is that a bad thing? I have my conversation with god every single day my heart is full of love for him. I asked him to show me a sign, the next week I spontaneously met Dalai Lama. Why does my soul burn to be with the supreme?

Q: Recently, I had a nice debate with one of my close devotee friends here in the Boston temple over the position on our home altar of a photo of Sri Yasoda-Damodara relative to the position on the same altar of a photo of Lakshmi Devi – the eternal consort of Lord Narayana. This led to the following questions which I will be very grateful to get answers for.

Our position is not safe but when one is in the shelter of the Supreme Lord that is the position of safety: the doubtless and fearless path, in the language of the Bhagavatam, akuto-bhayam (Srimad Bhagavatam, 2.1.11).

"When the heart becomes infused with determination, subservience, trust, surrender, and humility, it is situated in sraddha (faith). Sraddha is essential; it is the right position to receive the message of Krishna."
