Hare Krishna, here you will find the latest updates to this website.

Q: Apparently one version of Ramayana indicates Mantara being severely admonished or even beaten by Shatrughna when he found out from a Minister that she was behind the intrigue of Ram’s banishment. Bharata stopped this. Can you verify?

It is by the mercy of the Lord that one gets the position of shelter. It is by the mercy of the Lord, which means it is by the mercy of the devotees of the Lord. When we get the mercy of the Lord, we get His shelter. And, by getting His shelter, we get His protection. We get everything – whatever is it that one needs. Just as Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 9.22, yoga-ksemam vahamy aham: Whatever it is that one needs, Krishna supplies, and whatever one has, Krishna maintains. Krishna does that personally. It is a personal relationship. So, we have come to take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Krishna exhibited His mercy potency, and Mother Yasoda served Krishna with great and increased sincerity. With the combination of these two, Krishna was bound. Vishwanath Chakravarti Thakur says that the “two inches too short” [of the rope used to try and bind Krishna] indicate that in any devotional activity two things are required; the sincere desire and effort of the devotee to serve Krishna, and Krishna’s mercy. Both must be there.

Krishna knows our hearts. He knows. And  when Krishna sees pride in the heart of the devotee, there may be some exchange between us and Krishna or some circumstance in life that is intended to help us become free from pride. If we are sincere devotees, we will have some understanding that Krishna is not pleased. One understanding is that Krishna wants that pride taken away from our heart, just like He did with Indra. So consider – what is that mountain of pride that dwells within our hearts?

In this world there is no enemy other than a mind that is not controlled. The enemy is within. The mind needs to go to Krishna. Within the instruction that the mind should go to Krishna, there is strength, intelligence (buddhi), Buddhi directs the mind. You will get buddhi when you show Krishna. “I want to be with You.” Then Krishna gives you buddhi, and you can direct the mind. Otherwise you can’t.

Q: Are there any definitive rules, either from Srila Prabhupada or some shastra (preferably one used or referred to by Srila Prabhuapda) that defines the placement of Srila Prabupada’s murti in an ISKCON temple and where the SB class speaker and audience should be seated? Are there any absolute prohibitions in this regards that forbid any particular placement? How many temples out there have Srila Prabhupada on the right side of the room when facing the altar (such as one finds in Dallas and New Vrindaban)?

Prabhupada definitely wanted his vyasasana placed either with his left hand side to the deity, or facing the deities from directly opposite.

When Srila Prabhupada came to America, he brought with him the translation of the First Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. As a new devotee, I heard so many times that, “Everything you need to know to go back to Godhead is within the First Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. So, learn the First Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam very thoroughly and everything you need to know to go back to Godhead will be there.” That was pretty encouraging. As you become more and more familiar with the First Canto, you can understand that it’s true! Everything you need to know!

In the Padma Purana it is described that after Krishna departed, Srimad Bhagavatam appeared. Just like when the sun sets on the western horizon, the moon may appear on the eastern horizon in due course of time. When the full moon shines as brilliantly as the sun but gives cooling and soothing rays, as opposed to the hot scorching rays of the sun, this is like the appearance of Srimad Bhagavatam.

Having material attachments is not an offense. It is, however, an offense to consciously, deliberately, and complacently maintain those attachments to the temporary and to the material circumstances of life. We are to act dutifully and use those things in relationship to Krishna with a view of becoming attached to Him. That is proper.

“Our engagement in devotional service is dependent upon Radharani’s compassion. The internal potency extended to us as the opportunity to engage in Krsna’s service is Radharani’s mercy. Devotees who understand this pray to Srimati Radharani for Her mercy. She goes out of Her way to extend Her mercy. On Her appearance day, we can appeal to Her to continue to be engaged in Krsna’s service by Her mercy.”
