Summary: The following story, adapted from the thirteenth chapter of the Nrsimha Purana, illustrates the negative effects of pride, and the power of a chaste lady. (Adaptation by Madhavananda das, Bhubanesvar.) The notes at the end need to be considered carefully. Essential in the teachings of Srimad-Bhagavatam is this: the process of bhakti is so powerful that it's performance carries one beyond the obligations of worldly religious duty, and it yields all the fruits of ALL high-grade activities, including pious activities, etc. However, the consciousness behind the performance of bhakti determines the degree to which one receives this benediction.
