I felt the Jagannatha Puri Yatra to be quite an experience on many levels. As we learned from His Holiness Romapada Swami Maharaja, it was a special opportunity to go deeper into Krishna consciousness, to take the next step, to chant and hear with presence, and to increase the capacity to receive Lord Chaitanya’s mercy in our lives. Hearing about the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya and His associates in the place where they happened (and are happening) was immensely enlightening and purifying for me. I particularly remember hearing about King Prataparudra and how he met with Lord Chaitanya by receiving the mercy of devotees such as Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, Ramananda Roy, and other associates of Lord Chaitanya.

HH Romapada Swami and Youth in Puri

When we left the U.S. to go on pilgrimage to Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s places of pastime around Puri, we were anticipating pure bliss, and that’s exactly what we got. On the very first day of our yatra, however, Madhavananda Prabhu warned us that many obstacles must be overcome before one actually gains entrance into the holy dhama (abode). Granted, we did have to endure some hardships before we could actually enter the transcendental dhama, but by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy and that of senior devotees such as His Holiness Romapada Swami Maharaja, we were able to overcome them.
