Hare Krishna. Following is a description of His Holiness Romapada Swami's visit to Penn State University at University Park ("Happy Valley"), the home of Vedic Society.
Wednesday, April 2nd 2008
Venue: Shrawan Prabhu's residence
Topic: SB. 1.3.43-44
Time: 8:00 pm
It was afternoon and the weather at Penn State began to get brighter. We all took it as a sign of auspiciousness and waited eagerly for the arrival of HH Romapada Swami Maharaja. Despite his busy schedule and tiring trip, Maharaja showed absolutely no sign of exhaustion. Instead, seeing his effulgent face, the devotees were filled with excitement and enthusiasm.
His Holiness Romapada Swami Maharaja arrived on Wednesday, April 8, from Seattle after a grueling 16hr non-stop journey. State College is in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania and Maharaja comes to Penn State once every semester to give his association to the handful, but growing number of devotees. Maharaja looked effulgent even after the long travel and gave a talk on BG 6.47 to the packed hall almost immediately after he arrived. Most of the audience did not even have a clue of what Krishna Consciousness was but, Maharaja very expertly introduced them to the Yoga ladder. Ever the benefactor of conditioned souls, Maharaja, gave the pure message of Bhakti yoga to this fresh new audience.

Our minds were full with the wonderful experiences from the recent Japa retreat at Gita Nagari; our hearts were brimming with the loving exchanges we had with the devotees at the retreat and our focus had not yet shifted from the Holy Names. In short, this visit by Srila Romapada Swami Maharaja was awaited with great enthusiasm and eagerness by the handful of devotees here.
From March 30th evening to April 1st morning, we had the wonderful and most merciful association of HH Romapada Swami Maharaja. Maharaja spoke at the following events:
1) Home program on the evening of March 30th: Maharaja gave a precursor to his college talk scheduled the next day. The topic was "Compassion."
A few of the important points from Maharaja's lecture are:
- Real compassion is not just to relieve a person from temporary stress, but to release the individual from the source from where all distress is coming
- Fundamental misconception of the self is to identify with what it's not
- What we should be doing depends on who we are
- The soul is our real identity, not the place where we are born or the color of our skin
I know the title of this article is sensational but this was my sincere feeling as I started meditating and writing about the recent visit of HH Romapada Swami Maharaja to State College! We feel very fortunate to be the recipients of Maharaja's care, love and training.
Maharaja's schedule is grueling and yet again, Maharaja had a lecture scheduled scant hours after undertaking a five hour train journey from NYC after a long flight back from Guyana. This made me remember the time when we accompanied Maharaja and were left drained of all energy at the end of the day. As he got into the car all radiant, he looked at our sorry state and jokingly remarked, "And they say Sannyasa life is easy," his wit bringing much cheer to us in that sorry state.
