Where are the obstacles in Vaikuntha? There may seem to be obstacles, like Aristasura galloping down the road toward the residents of Vrindavan. They immediately take shelter in Krishna, and Krishna protects them. Even in Goloka Vrindavan, there are no demons, but there is the sense of demons. What is the purpose of that? It is there so that they can take more intensely their shelter in Krishna.

Our desire must be to take sustainable steps to move towards Krishna in a continuous manner. But complacency is not the part of the program. Complacency is tacit and implicit in inviting maya. Srila Prabhupada says in one lecture, "It's not that we have to invite maya." When we interrupt the flow of devotional service, maya comes immediately. When our mind rules, the mind may say, "I worked very hard. Now I deserve a little vacation or a break." As soon as that thought enters, it's not like we then have to say, "Maya, can you come for a moment?" We do not have to ask, but immediately maya is there, engaging us.

How we can help improve our devotee relationships? What we do with others should be what we do with ourselves. Or, what we do with ourselves will be what we do with other people. As we move along, our life may bump into another person's life, and by associating together for some time we will come to know more about them…We may not know the circumstances of life of someone who is coming from a different culture and upbringing, which explains why they are carrying on in certain ways. The ways they are carrying on are exhibiting their spirituality or shortcoming that makes the present make-up of that person.

Question: What does it mean to find faults within ourselves and at the same time perform devotional service very happily? How can one find faults with oneself and still be happy?

"In your preaching, or simply in living your life, you must come in contact with different material things. In a polite and proper way, you have to interact with those material things. Be very cautious in doing so. Know that this is a dangerous area, and keep your mind fixed on the purpose…because if you are inattentive, attraction for enjoying those other things will take place. It will displace your spiritual purpose and take over. If we remember this, there is no chance of our being victimized by material activities."

Pride in the heart checks spiritual advancement. Pride in the heart makes one fall down. It’s so difficult because we are so addicted to fruitive mentality that we want to carry that baggage of fruitive mentality with us into devotional service. So we do a little devotional service, something nice happens, and we want to take credit for it and be proud of it. This is the opposite condition of heart to receive the real happiness that devotional service offers; so we go down. Beware of the beast called pride. It will beat you up into a little pulp and you will just cry because the bully called pride just beat you up. And it is within our own heart.
