Maharaja Pariksit says “Tell me more! Speak more of such katha!” Such hearing has an effect on the heart. The spiritual happiness swells within the heart and the eagerness to hear increases- not just the eagerness of the feeling of happiness and contentedness within, but also the happiness of the ear and the heart just to hear the glorification of the Supreme Lord increases.
It's like water in a desert. By experiencing such happiness within, detachment from all the rest arises- the pain, the pinching in the heart that comes from hankering for material happiness that one doesn’t have, or the expectation for happiness that doesn’t happen and the frustration as a result, and all the other varieties of misery in between. All of that just fades into inconsequential. One may go on doing one's duties, but that expectation of happiness through senses meeting the sense objects, and the feeling that "oh, it's going to be nice," just dissipates.
