TOKYO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took a big swipe at "my secular friends" predicting television debates back home on why he had carried the Bhagavad Gita with him on his five-day tour of Japan.

"I came bearing the Bhagavad Gita as a gift...I always present the Gita to eminent people I meet all over the world. When I met the (Japanese) Emperor I gave him the Gita because I have nothing more valuable to give and the world has nothing more valuable to get," the Prime Minister said, addressing the Indian community in one of his last engagements in Tokyo.

On this day 46 years ago Srila Prabhupada wrote the following letter to the Pope Paul VI.

Reading it one cannot help but admire Srila Prabhupada’s unique combination of humility (offering obeisances to the Pope’s “lotus feet”), broad vision with strict adherence to the parampara, along with what he himself called being “daring and active” in his preaching.

The letter is also remarkably timeless, and could be sent to the current Pope or a similar dignitary without a single change, should anyone wish to seek such a personality's audience today.

Hare Krishna.

“It is not that we should change to accommodate the public but that we should change the public to accommodate us... If we simply present Krishna Consciousness in a serious and attractive way, without need to resort to fashionable slogans or tricks, that is sufficient. Our unique asset is our purity. No one anywhere can match it. That will be noticed eventually and appreciated, as long as we do not diminish or neglect the highest standard of purity in performing our routine work, not that we require to display or announce ourselves in very clever ways to get attention. No, our pure standard is enough. Let us stand on that basis.”

Message from BBT North Europe

For the past couple of years, the North European BBT has been busy converting its library into quality ebooks in all current formats. Near the end of 2011 we announced that devotees could download Prabhupada's books for free from our website, bbtmedia.com.

A whopping 150,000 downloads later, we feel this program was a success!

Now that we have Srila Prabhupada's English language books converted, we're working diligently on all the languages the North European BBT publishes. And we're beginning to upload other material to the site – audio books (the first volume of the Brhad-Bhagavatamrta is up, narrated by Kesava Bharati Maharaja along with a number of recordings of Srila Prabhupada's books), podcasts, and BBT art images.

How should we preach to ordinary people?

One of our god-sister's, Sujan dd, was in Vrindavan with her young child, a daughter, during Srila Prabhuapda's final pastimes. During a darshan, her daughter was with playing with another young child and somehow she ingested a poisonous substance, unknown to Sujan who was at the darshan. When she returned, her daughter complained on not feeling well and Sujan took her on her lap, not thinking it was anything serious, and encouraged her to chant. Her daughter died in her arms. You can imagine the devastation felt by this young mother, who was filled with grief and confusion. The body was bathed and dressed by devotees and put on a stretcher and taken on praikrama around the temple.
