Some misguided devotees cite Bhagavad Gita 18.66 as an excuse not to do their prescribed duties according to sastra. In the discussion below Srila Prabhupada explains that Bhagavad Gita 18.66, means to follow Krsna’s dharma and give up your home made dharmas (desha dharma, kula dharma, daridra nayarana dharma etc)

Brahmananda: I once asked Srila Prabhupada, "What is the best way to sing kirtan?" He replied that "You sing in such a way that you never get tired, so that the kirtan should be able to go on endlessly."

"I have received also one letter from Upendra today, and I am so glad he is released within 10 days. That was my expectation when he came to see me, that he couldn't be incarcerated for more than a week. This instance of suffering by a devotee should be carefully noted. As Upendra was in the beginning incarcerated for 3 months, it was reduced to one week; similarly, when a devotee is seen in trouble, it should be accepted as God's Mercy. Just like Upendra's suffering for 3 months was destined by the law, but by the Mercy of God the suffering is reduced to one week only. So a devotee always accepts his distress as minimized by God's Mercy, although he would have to suffer many more times the suffering.

Srila Prabhupada's Preference of Language

1. Brahmananda prabhu told me recently in Vrindaban that he said to Srila Prabhupada that he (Brahmananda) was very “excited” about something. Srila
Prabhupada stopped him and said “No, devotees do not get excited”. Since my encounter with Bp I use “enlivened” or “inspired”, not "excited".

2. I was in Srila Prabhupada’s room in the Henry St. temple. Balavanta and I had come to talk to him about the “political preachings” the “In God We Trust Party for Purified Leaders.” Balavanta had been running for office in Atlanta. To the best of my memory the following conversation took place:

Balavanta: Srila Prabhupada, the devotees are really excited about this program!

This year the Prabhupada December Marathon in Ukraine was quite unusual with people really damaged by the news of the war on the eastern side of the country. There were various series of drafts of many thousands to the army, there was mourning for war victims and acts of terrorism. It was doubly unusual, because due to the war the whole country suffered from heavy depression with the local currency rate falling against dollar from 8 to 22. People complained about the lack of money and unemployment. Besides that, due to the political situation, sankirtan devotees lost Crimea and East of Ukraine as a ksetra for book distribution.

"I, the Soul of all beings, am not as satisfied by ritual worship, brahminical initiation, penances, or self-discipline as I am by faithful service rendered to one's spiritual master."
