"Instructions for the week" are short selections from Srila Romapada Swami's lectures and writings which capture essential, inspirational messages for progressive spiritual development. These Instructions are especially personal, practical, and universal in their relevance to devotional aspirants, and they are intended to help remind, guide, and be applied by the reader/recipient.

Sanatana Goswami Chanting

"Regulation helps immensely to get one off the mental platform and stop wasting so much energy on considering 'should I do this, or should I...' Just, be thoughtful, establish some standard and stick to that." .

-- lecture on Bhag. 1.8.30-32, 3/13/00

"Prabhupada explains that through repeated hearing, chanting, worshiping, etc., people in general become elevated. The statement that Queen Kunti is making is that by this process one can see the lotus feet of the Lord. We can see the lotus feet of the Lord in the form of the Deity, but what is it that we are seeing. Srila Prabhupada is saying [in the purport] that it is not always that one can see the lotus feet of the Lord [eg. even when He was present on the battlefield of Kuruksetra not everyone was able to recognize Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead].

"By glorifying the process of bhakti directly...one is also glorifying the object of devotion, or one is glorifying Krsna directly. Because bhakti is manifest by the internal potency of Krsna, and the internal potency is nondifferent from the Lord, so the Lord is being glorified."

-- Srila Romapada Swami, 3/13/00 IITD, Bhag. 1.8.33-41

Devotional service

"Krsna is knowable through devotion... Krsna sees the devotion, and He discloses. 'You are a very confidential person. Because of your devotion, I will show you. I will disclose to you. I will give you the intelligence by which you can understand Me. Here is the intelligence. Now here I am.' It is a gift from Krsna. It is reciprocation from Krsna when He sees bhakti. That is our theology. Therefore, developing our devotion is all-critical, to have real knowledge. Not by studying, per se, but by devotion. We read Prabhupada's books to develop our devotion, our appreciation for Krsna.

Cleaning temple

"The rule of thumb is, as you act according to your capacity, your capacity will increase. And as your capacity increases, you'll get more responsibility, that's beyond your capacity. I'm sharing that realization with you... Krsna is wonderful! And one of the wonderful ways that He acts is that He always, very expertly, places His devotee in situations that's beyond their capacity."

Srila Romapada Swami goes on to explain the reason why Krsna does that, namely to always keep the devotee in a mood of dependence upon Him. .

-- lecture on SB 1.8.28-29, 3/12/00, IITD

"Lord Krsna appeared 5,000 years ago in Vrndavana to fulfill the desire of His devotees to gain His association. In Bhagavad-gita, Krsna describes that there are three divisions of His purpose for appearing. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge. Giving protection to His devotees (paritranaya sadhunam) is one of the features of the Personality of Godhead. For those who are surrendered to Him, who are depending upon Him, Krsna always gives His protection. At the time that Krsna appeared there was an over abundance, an over burdening weight, of demoniac elements on the planet.

Devotional service

"Whatever your service, be satisfied somehow or the other. When Krsna sees that disposition, He is very pleased."

"Each devotee needs to understand that there is an intrinsic worth to that soul who places themselves at the feet of Krsna."

"Krsna just wants to see that we are trying to please Him. We can't purchase Krsna with our service."

"Quantification of our service is not a measure of success. To Krsna the only thing that matters is that someone is trying to come to Him."

"By what measure is Krsna pleased? By the love and devotion with which our services are offered. By adhering to this one principle, one is on the path back to Godhead."

"Emotions about how we feel about ourselves, if not on a spiritual platform, will never bring satisfaction to us." .

"The right platform is to act in relationship with guru and Krsna. We may not be perfect but we have to be in relationship with guru and Krsna. This should be our motto: 'Acting and being always in my relationship with guru and Krsna is the guiding principle of my life, and therefore I am satisfied.' Guru and Krsna look at what we are and not what we do... It is not just doing things, but the spiritual loving relationship that exists between us -- devotee and Krsna, disciple and master, friend and friend, student and teacher, parent and child -- that will bring us real satisfaction.
