Although many of us heard Krsna's name before coming in contact with Krsna consciousness, we had to receive the Hare Krsna maha-mantra before we actually started chanting. In a deeper sense, receiving means more than just the syllables. Or, as Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura spoke, chanting should not be lip deep, but heart deep.

Many people don’t like women being spoken of as holding a lesser position. The scripture sees everyone equally,paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśinaḥ.  Then why does it say deprecating things about women?

Kunti is offering prayers to Kṛṣṇa. In a very concise and simple-hearted way, she is expressing very deep and profound understanding about Kṛṣṇa’s position. We know that one cannot understand Kṛṣṇa unless Kṛṣṇa shows His mercy and says, "I am like this." He is unknowable. He is not knowable by scholarship. He is not knowable by piety. He is not knowable by anything except disclosure. He discloses Himself to His devotee.

Question: I want clarification on spiritual conception. If there are filters through which I process what I read and hear, how will I know that I am grasping the proper message?

Maharaja: You can assume that the filters are on. When there is spontaneous attraction and uninterrupted waves of ecstasy, then you know. Until then, there are filters.

In a sequence, Prabhupada says the same thing three times in different ways. When Prabhupada does that, we must understand it is a very important message. He explains that Krishna is equal to everyone. The mercy of Krishna is available, distributed, and given equally to everyone. But a devotee of the Lord is more glorified because he is always in touch with the All-Great. Prabhupada points out that it is a question of receptivity. The sun shines everywhere, but some places are always dark. According to receptivity, or being always in touch, one receives the full-fledged mercy of the Lord, and then manifests that full-fledged mercy of the Lord.

Vakṣye kṛṣṇa-kathodayam – that which gives rise to the transcendental narration of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the association of devotees, this is what will happen if we are associating with devotees properly. It gives rise to Krishna katha. But often we come into the association of devotees and it is something else. At the Detroit Ratha Yatra, it was a downpour. It stopped when we reached the park; then the park was a lake next to the river. As we were going along the roadway into the park, literally with water up to our ankles, the kirtan party was dancing and dancing and dancing as it wasn’t raining.

On a morning walk with Srila Prabhupada at Central Park in New York, we were on the East side of the park by 72nd street, where there is a pond and a children’s play area. Kids go there and put little sail boats and little toy motor boats in the pond. They have a hold around a statue of the famous storyteller/author Hans Christian Andersen. We walked around a couple of times and Prabhupada pointed with his cane, wanting to see what is North in the park. We took a little path and followed it to where it comes out, right before the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
