If we become moved, elated by some fortunate circumstance, or shocked by some unfortunate circumstance, and our mental equilibrium is lost, so is our spiritual position. So what does one do? One needs to secure one's spiritual position very strongly. Then one can be neutral, avoiding extremes this way or extremes that way. Don't let go of your spiritual shelter. Take firm spiritual shelter and stay there. Don't let go!

From a Lecture by HH Romapada Swami on Srimad Bhagavatam 5.8.01-11, Pastimes of Bharata Maharaja, Vrindavan March 2011

Cultivating Our True Shelter
It’s not a balance issue – balancing the spiritual with the material aspects of our life, as some persons think, it’s a consciousness issue – consciously being aware of our circumstances and, while addressing our circumstances, maintaining undivided attentiveness upon our genuine shelter. Above any other consideration, most essential is the ongoing cultivation of our genuine shelter.”

Prabhupada came with a message. The message is revival of Krsna Consciousness. Message is the message of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The message is to take shelter of the holy name, and the purification that comes to one who sincerely takes shelter of the holy name, that will awaken self realization and God realization very quickly!

It is by the mercy of the Lord that one gets the position of shelter. It is by the mercy of the Lord, which means it is by the mercy of the devotees of the Lord. When we get the mercy of the Lord, we get His shelter. And, by getting His shelter, we get His protection. We get everything – whatever is it that one needs. Just as Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita 9.22, yoga-ksemam vahamy aham: Whatever it is that one needs, Krishna supplies, and whatever one has, Krishna maintains. Krishna does that personally. It is a personal relationship. So, we have come to take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
